Recent Weather Conditions Cause Elevated Chloride Levels in City of Rahway Water Supply - Drinking Water Remains Within NJDEP Standards for Consumption

Please be advised that Veolia is aware of the elevated chloride and sodium levels that are contributing to the “salty” taste of your tap water due to the treatments used to address the recent snowfall. We are currently working to address these elevated levels in our source water (Rahway River). Although this incident is not an emergency, we want to provide our customers with additional information and inform you of our activities to address this issue.

Recent winter weather events and snow and ice control measures impact the City of Rahway’s water supply, the Rahway River. If you are experiencing a “salty” taste it is due to elevated levels of chloride and sodium from road salt runoff and is a temporary seasonal occurrence.

Because chloride and sodium are dissolved in the source water, it is difficult to remove through the treatment processes provided at our facility. However, the City of Rahway is currently supplementing its treated water supply from the river with treated water purchased from our primary backup water provider to reduce the levels of chloride and sodium in the drinking water.

According to the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP), for healthy individuals, the sodium intake from water is minimal compared to the intake of sodium from salt in the diet. However, elevated levels of sodium may be a concern for persons on a sodium-restricted diet. If you have any concerns, please consult your health care provider.

Should you have additional questions or concerns, please contact Veolia Rahway customer service at 877-303-2435 or [email protected].
