Aug 14, 2020

UPDATE: As of August 15th, the boil water advisory has been lifted. It is no longer necessary for customers to boil their water. For more information, click here.

A boil water advisory has been issued for residents of Jersey City following a positive E. coli bacteria test result taken during routine water sampling. Upon receiving the result, SUEZ immediately notified local officials and the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection. The boil water advisory will remain in effect until further notice.

E. coli bacteria can cause illness and are especially a concern for people with weakened immune systems.

  • taking medication,
  • brushing teeth,
  • washing food,
  • mixing baby formula or food,
  • mixing juices or drinks,
  • feeding pets;
  • washing dishes by hand; and
  • all other consumption.

Water does not have to be boiled for the following activities:

  • showering,
  • washing dishes,  using a dishwasher; and
  • washing clothes.

SUEZ will provide updates when tests show no bacteria are present and there is no longer a need to boil water. For guidelines on ways to lessen the risk of infection by bacteria and other disease-causing organisms, please contact the EPA Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 1-800-426-4791.
