Hoboken & Jersey City Water Main Break Response - Update - Wednesday, February 19

Crews will continue working through the evening on emergency repairs following a massive water main break near 18th Street and Jersey Avenue, adjacent to the Hoboken border.

In an effort to complete repairs to the damaged 36” main, are currently executing a planned shutdown of the Jersey City interconnect.

Hoboken remains under a boil water advisory. There is currently no boil water advisory for Jersey City.

Water Service Impacts

Veolia has switched Hoboken water feed to a secondary source, allowing for water to continue to flow into Hoboken while the work continues. Hoboken residents may experience pressure fluctuations during this time–particularly during peak morning demand. Higher floors in residential buildings may be more acutely impacted.

Residents and businesses are reminded that a Boil Water Advisory remains in effect for Hoboken until further notice. The Boil Water Advisory is a necessary precaution, as water pressure fell below the recommended threshold during Veolia repairs. Please see below for reminders on how, and when, to safely boil your water for consumption.

In Jersey City, the Newport/Harborside area may experience low water pressure, particularly in larger buildings, as those areas are fed from a secondary source to facilitate the repair. There is currently NO Boil Water Advisory for Jersey City.

Residents are advised to take proactive contingencies in preparation for potential low water pressure throughout the evening. Bottled water is suggested, and tap water can be stored in pots, jugs, or similar containers.

HOBOKEN RESIDENTS:

In Hoboken, residents and businesses should boil their water for at least one minute for the following: washing dishes, drinking, cooking, or baking, making ice cubes, taking medication, brushing teeth, washing food, mixing baby formula or food, mixing juices or drinks, feeding pets, and all other consumption.

Water does not have to be boiled for showering or washing clothes.
